The Center for Chronic Medical Conditions

The mission of the Center for Chronic Medical Conditions (CCMC) is to provide specialized support and care to address the psychological sequelae of a chronic or life-threatening medical illness for clients and their families across the lifespan, from pediatrics to older adulthood. Specific areas of treatment offered by CCMC include:

The Center for Chronic Medical Conditions

Individual therapy

Being diagnosed and living with a chronic or life-threatening illness can bring many challenges.  With the aim of helping clients regain one’s sense of control and identity, CCMC provides individual therapy to address the various difficulties with adjusting to an illness, and the challenges of negotiating school, work, and one’s social life while living with a medical condition.

Pain Management

The impact of chronic pain on one’s life can go beyond physical discomfort.  CCMC offers cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help

clients identify how feelings, thoughts, and behaviors impact the pain experience and to develop effective coping strategies to manage physical discomfort.

Family Therapy

A chronic or life-threatening illness of a loved one can have a significant impact on the family.  With the goal of maintaining a healthy and supportive home environment, CCMC offers family therapy to provide support to caregivers and facilitate improved communication among family members regarding the changes in family roles and the increased stress and demands that an illness can have on a family.

Support Groups

One of the greatest challenges of being diagnosed with a medical condition is feeling alone in your experience.  The aim of CCMC’s support groups for children, teenagers, and adults is to allow clients to come together to share their experiences, the challenges they face, and learn CBT-based strategies together that reinforce healthy adjustment to one’s illness.  Parent and caregiver support groups are also offered.

CCMC offers bereavement support to parents, siblings, and caregivers to create a space to express the multitude of emotions that one experiences when their loved one dies.
